Gum Disease Treatment: The Difference between Laser and Scalpel

If you’re planning to see your dentist for gum disease it’s important to understand your options. Traditional gum disease treatment is very different from laser gum disease treatment.

The Old Way

Traditional Gum disease treatment involves the dentist for gum disease using a scalpel to cut deep into the gum line to scrape away bacteria and diseased tissue from inside infected pockets. But traditional methods also remove healthy gum tissue in the process, which reduces the gum line and often creates aesthetic concerns for the patient and a greater sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

Bone grafting or other material is also frequently required during traditional gum disease treatment – a process that helps soft tissue to reattach to the root surface. Patients receiving conventional gum disease treatment also need a general anesthetic and upon waking, find lots of stiches and packing material in their mouth. Pain medication and strict food restrictions are also the norm during recovery, which can be lengthy. And in cases where the teeth can’t be saved, extractions are necessary, and patients usually end up with dentures or implants.

The bottom line is that for most patients, traditional gum disease treatment means major surgery.

LANAP® gum disease treatment is a much kinder, no-scalpel approach to healthier teeth and gums. This minimally invasive treatment uses laser energy for a less painful experience, which means there’s no cutting, no heavy bleeding and no sutures. When you visit the dentist for gum disease, all you’ll need is some local anesthetic to numb the areas your dentist will be working on.

Your dentist for gum disease, Dr. Jones, uses the Periolase laser, which emits tiny beams of light designed to ferret out the bacteria hidden between the teeth and gums. That means that your healthy gum tissue remains. The scalpel can’t do that. In fact, scalpel surgery always destroys some of the good tissue along with the bad. But no matter how deep your gum pockets are or how much debris there is, the Periolase knows how to find and kill only the bacteria, leaving behind the healthy tissue to reattach to the roots of your teeth.

Plus, after a LANAP® gum disease treatment, patients can usually go about their day without taking any pain medication. In fact, most patients are back to work or enjoying other activities in less than 24 hours.

There’s more …

LANAP® Laser Gum Disease Treatment even Regenerates Bone

Going to a laser-certified dentist for gum disease does more than remove the fear and stress of undergoing conventional surgery. LANAP® actually brings gum health to an exciting new level long after you leave the dentist chair.

Medical research, including histological studies and thousands of actual patients, show that the LANAP® gum disease treatment actually stimulates bone growth around existing teeth. That means tooth extractions are a thing of the past. You can keep you own teeth and start growing new bone to protect them.

Most people are good candidates for laser gum disease treatment. Ask your dentist for gum disease if LANAP® is the right treatment for you.
