Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers: A More Natural Looking Option

Porcelain veneers are tooth-colored, paper-thin shells customized to fit and bond over your own natural teeth to improve their shape, size, color, or length. Veneers made of porcelain are extremely stain-resistant, lasting anywhere from eight to 10 years. And because they reflect light much the same way your real teeth do, they always look natural.

The Procedure

Porcelain veneers usually require three visits to Dr. Geoffrey Jones.

The First Visit:

1. Dr. Jones will examine your teeth to determine if porcelain veneers are right for you.
2. You and Dr. Jones will discuss what you’re looking to achieve with veneers, how the procedure works, and the kind of results you can expect.

The Second Visit:

1. To prep your teeth for veneers, your dentist will remove about a half of a millimeter of enamel from the surface of your teeth – about the same thickness of porcelain material that will be used to make them.
2. The next step is to make an impression of your teeth to create your custom-made veneers. This takes about three weeks to complete

The Third Visit:

1. Dr. Jones shapes and trips the new porcelain veneers for a perfect fit and may also adjust the color for the most natural look possible.
2. Your teeth are cleaned, polished, and then gently etched to create a surface the veneer can bond to tightly.
3. Dr. Jones will place the veneers over your teeth using a special cement and light beam that activates the chemicals in the cement. This step takes several hours to complete.

Taking Care of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers should be treated just like natural teeth –regular brushing and flossing are important – but porcelain veneers require a little more TLC to prevent damage. You might need to avoid certain foods that could stain your veneers, such as raw carrots. Also, if you grind your teeth in your sleep, wearing a sleep guard will help protect your new smile.

Are Porcelain Veneers Right for You?

Most patients qualify for porcelain veneers, except in some cases, those who smoke or have severely weakened teeth. Also, patients with gum disease, tooth decay, missing teeth, or require orthodontic care may need to undergo treatments for those conditions before getting them.

Also, since removing the structure or enamel your teeth cannot be reversed, Dr. Jones may suggest other forms of treatment, particularly if your natural teeth still look and function fairly well.
